🆕 In The News: City of Hamilton Auditor General Releases Scathing Report on Barton-Tiffany Shelters
The City of Hamilton's Auditor General, Charles Brown, released a scathing report regarding the Barton-Tiffany outdoor shelters, a project which Ward 6 Councillor Tom Jackson voted against in the fall of 2024 when it came to Council. The report noted that "the imperative of urgency overrode the importance of due diligence and good governance".
Specific examples include the City of Hamilton using a single-sourced, foreign vendor which had no prior track record for which the City conducted very little research despite spending millions and millions of tax payer dollars for shelters that were accepted with electrical and insulation issues.
The beleaguered project initiated by a Mayoral Directive issued by Mayor Andrea Horwath in August of 2024 had significant cost overruns reaching $7.9 million ($5.1 million over the budgeted $2.8 million). Ultimately, tax payers are paying $100,000 for each shelter bed.
