๐ Piping Up About Lead
Attention Hamilton homeowners of houses built before 1955.
Hamilton Water has mailed letters to homeowners who own homes built before 1955 as lead was commonly used in private water service lines. While Hamiltonโs infrastructure renewal and corrosion control programs help reduce the potential for lead in drinking water, lead exposure can still occur from private water service lines, plumbing, or household fixtures. The City's goal is to give residents clear, practical guidance so they can take steps to protect their homes and families.
These letters mailed by Hamilton Water either confirmed that lead was used for the water service line pipe or that the material used for the water service line pipe is unknown.
In Ward 6, there are:
- 39 addresses that will be receiving letters confirming lead being used for the water service line
- 750 addresses that will be receiving letters noting that the material used for the water service line is unknown.
Those homeowners that received a letter confirming a lead water service line had an overview of the health risks associated with lead and encouraged homeowners to consider replacing their lead pipe. These residents with confirmed lead pipes have been invited to participate in Hamilton Waterโs Lead Sampling Program. This program, required by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, provides an opportunity for residents to contribute to the safety and well-being of the community.
Those homeowners that received a letter noting that the material of their water service line is unknown also had an overview of the health risks associated with lead and invited them to confirm the type of their water service line, which also helps the City of Hamilton maintain accurate records. To this end, homeowners can choose either:
- a virtual check by e-mailing photos to [email protected] (for an instructional video to check your pipes for lead, click here)
- an in-person inspection, which can be booked by calling Hamilton Water at (905) 546-2489 (CITY)
